Local Authorities (LAs) sometimes have problems in fulfilling their statutory duties to raise standards through effective challenge and support for schools. In many cases these are a direct result of a lack of leadership and management capacity within schools.

We have helped a number of LAs and schools to find an effective way to meet this challenge. Support packages are assembled against a number of clear aims and principles.

Our support packages seek to:

• Bring additional management expertise and capacity to the senior and middle leadership at the “receiving” school

• Ensure that the resources available from the LA and all other sources is efficiently and effectively integrated to provide a coherent support package.

We believe that all support packages should:

• Be delivered by senior managers who have experience of working in a similar context

• Be delivered through the coordinated action of a team rather than through the ‘parachuting in’ of an individual

• Be delivered by a support team that, as far as possible, are current practitioners who are working in a similar context

• Provide stability for the “receiving” school, but do not damage the “donor” school that is providing the support from its senior or middle leadership team.
